- Default date of birth: Older records often show 01/01/1985 when the exact date was not recorded. Then the passport shows the real date, and now the DOB also mismatches.
- Post-marriage change: Passport still in maiden name while bank, Aadhaar and ITR move to married name, or vice versa.

Your Passport Is the Boss: Make Everything Align to It
Here is the golden rule that solves most of the confusion. Your passport is the single source of truth for international travel. Don't try to make the passport look like Aadhaar. Make Aadhaar, PAN and other proofs look like the passport.
Why? Because airlines, immigration and consulates worldwide read your passport first. The Machine Readable Zone at the bottom of the passport page dictates how your name appears in flight and visa systems. So if your passport says ANANYA KRISHNAN, every supporting document should aim for ANANYA KRISHNAN.
This approach also fixes a frequent passport name mismatch caused by initials. If your passport expands initials already, update Aadhaar and PAN to the expanded form. It is faster, cheaper and accepted everywhere.
That said, if your passport itself has an error, you will need a reissue through Passport Seva. That takes longer, so factor in 2-4 weeks at least. For most people, however, the passport is already correct and the other IDs just need a correction.
How to Fix Aadhaar When It Doesn't Match Your Passport
Aadhaar correction is the quickest win for a passport name mismatch and you should try it first.
You can do it online or at an Aadhaar enrolment centre, but in-person is more reliable for a full name change.
- Gather proof: Your passport itself is accepted as valid proof of identity and address for Aadhaar updates. Carry the original plus a self-attested copy.
- Visit the UIDAI Aadhaar update portal or an enrolment centre. Select Name and DOB update.
- Enter the name exactly as it appears on your passport, including spaces. Cross-check character by character. I once typed an extra space and had to redo the whole thing.
- Pay the fee (about ₹50) and keep the Update Request Number. You can track status online.
- Timeline: Online requests with passport as proof often clear in 48 hours to 7 days. Centre-based updates can take 5-15 days and you get an updated e-Aadhaar you can download.
For DOB, Aadhaar also allows correction if your passport shows a different date. You will need a supporting document with the correct DOB. However UIDAI limits how many times you can change DOB, so get it right in one go. If your record shows 01 January by default, correcting it to the passport DOB now will prevent the same question every visa cycle.
How to Fix PAN When It Doesn't Match Your Passport
PAN is trickier because NSDL verifies against both Aadhaar and the income tax database. Still, a passport name mismatch on PAN is very fixable.
Apply for PAN correction via NSDL (or UTIITSL):
- Fill the CSF (Correction) form and tick the name field.
- Enter the name exactly as per passport. Do not add initials that are not on the passport.
- Choose Aadhaar-based e-KYC if your Aadhaar already matches the passport — it speeds things up. If Aadhaar is not yet corrected, do that first, then PAN.
- Upload passport copy as proof of identity. For DOB proof, passport again works.

What About a Full Legal Name Change? Gazette, Affidavit and Newspaper
Sometimes a passport name mismatch is not a typo at all. You legally changed your name after marriage, adoption, or personal choice, and now documents are split across two identities.
In India, a full name change for official records generally goes through three steps:

Consulates do not expect you to reprint three years of bank statements overnight. What they do expect is clarity.
