Wat Suan Dok has a collection of gleaming golden chedi, which are Buddhist mausoleums. The white spires contrast dramatically with the mountains in the background making the spot a favourite among photographers. The ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal families are interred here.

Admire at the 14th century Wat Phra Singh, a stellar example of Lanna architecture displayed in high-pitch, three-tier roofs and elaborately carved wood gables. Another example of Lanna architecture is the Wihan Lai Kham. Considered to be the main attraction of the complex, it was built in 1345 to house the Phra Buddha Singh statue, The Phra Singh, which gives the temple its name, is based on a lion Buddha, however, with many human characteristics.

Also visit Wat Chedi Luang, this large Buddhist temple in the heart of Chiang Mai is one of the city’s most famous locations. The enormous crumbling chedi built in 1441 is surrounded by striking elephant and serpent statues. These snake-like animals are known as nagas: mythical creatures who guard temples of great value!

Chiang Mai’s oldest temple is another must-see. Built in 1297, Wat Chiang Man houses two sacred and ancient Buddha statues. Be amazed by the Chang Lom chedi, known as the elephant chedi. This mausoleum is rimmed by brick-and-stucco elephants that appear to be supporting on their backs the structure’s upper floors.
