A visit to Doi Inthanon National Park, encompassing the highest peak in Thailand. At 2565 metres, Doi Inthanon is the highest peak in Thailand. Courtesy of the Thai Air Force who have a radar at the summit, there is a well-maintained road right up to the top. The mountain is a continuation of the Himalayan chain, though lush evergreen forest and mists are its clothing, rather than snow. On the lower slopes hilltribe people cultivate vegetables and herbs whereas the forest and mosses, dwarf rhododendron groves inhabit the damp higher reaches.
The area is popular for bird-watching with a variety of species, many from North Asia including mountain hawks and Eurasian woodcocks. Other sights include Karen hilltribe villages, Wachiratharn Waterfall and the twin pagodas commemorating the sixtieth birthdays of King Bhumiphol and Queen Sirikit.
The summit contains the shrine of Chao Inthawichayanon, a former ruler of Chiang Mai.
